  1.                             Guide for Guess
  2.                             ================

  4. This application is shareware - you may evaluate it for 30 days. If you
  5. continue to use it beyond this time then you must register!
  6.  
  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. Guess is a word puzzle based. A word is replaced with empty boxes, one per
  10. letter - the user must find which letter goes in what box.
  11.  
  12. Using Guess
  13. ------------
  14. Load Guess in the normal way. When you click on the icon on the icon bar
  15. the Guess window will open, with icons on the top row. A word from the
  16. default database is also selected and white boxes, one per letter, are
  17. shown along the bottom of the window. Guess supports Acorns interactive
  18. !Help so load it to find out what the icons do.
  19.  
  20. To place a letter in a box click on the letter you want on the right hand
  21. letter pad (a small red box shows that the letter is selected) - or press
  22. the letter on the keyboard, then click over the box you want to put the
  23. letter in. Repeat the process until you have a letter in each box, only
  24. then should you click on the OK button on the end of the row of boxes.

  26. A cross on a letter means that it is not in the word, a tick means that it
  27. is the correct letter in the correct place - when a new row created the
  28. correct letter is automatically copied upwards. An arrow pointing left or
  29. right indicates the letter is in the word, but not in the current position,
  30. and needs to be moved in the direction indicated.

  32. NB Once you click on the OK box on the end of a row you will not be able to
  33. change that row. The OK button moves up a row and you must enter your
  34. letters on the new row.

  36. If you find the word you will receive a score based on the size of the word
  37. and the number of hints you had.
  38.  
  39. Menu Options
  40. ------------
  41. Clicking Menu over the main window brings up a range of options - most are
  42. pretty obvious as to what they do, the rest are explained below:
  43.  
  44. a) Reset Files Path - if you have changed the directory used for word sets
  45.    (see below) then this will reset it to its previous setting
  46. b) Save New Path - again, if you change the directory used for word sets
  47.    then selecting this item makes your change permanent. Each time you load
  48.    Guess your new directory will be used
  49. c) Save As Default - makes the current set of words the default one; ie the
  50.    set of words used each time Guess is loaded
  51.  
  52. Word Sets
  53. ---------
  54. If you select the files icon then a directory called Words (inside the main
  55. Guess directory) is scanned. You can add further word sets to this
  56. directory if you wish - next time you start up Guess the extra sets will
  57. be detected. However you can set up a completely different directory if you
  58. wish by simply dragging a new directory onto the main window. If you want to
  59. make this directory permanent (ie the one used each time Guess is used)
  60. then choose the 'Save New Path' item on the Guess main menu.

  62. Word sets can also be loaded directly into Guess by dragging the word set
  63. (which is just an Edit file) onto the main window.

  65. Registration
  66. ------------
  67. The registration fee for Guess is 3.99 - this will keep you informed about
  68. upgrades as they become available as well as removing the 'unregistered'
  69. windows that pop up. You will also receive a simple editor so you can
  70. modify the word databases. To register make a cheque to M. Smith for 3.99
  71. and print clearly your address as well as who you want the program to be
  72. registered to. Include the name of the application on your note (ie Guess).

  100. Iridium Range
  101. -------------
  102. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  103. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  104. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. I have not tried them on a
  105. RISC PC, but they ought to be ok!
  106.  
  107. Geography:
  108. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  109.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  110.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  111.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  112.   & Africa.
  113. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  114.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  115.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  116. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  117.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  118. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  119.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  120. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  121.   with Key Satge 3 geography.
  122.  
  123. Science:
  124. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  125.   against the clock.
  126. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  127.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  128.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  129.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  130. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  131.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  132.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  133.   different each time they are printed.
  134. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  135.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  136.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  137.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  138.   also be produced.
  139. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  140. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  141.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  142. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  143.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  144. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  145.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  147. Word Puzzles:
  148. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  149.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  150. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  151.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  152.   on screen
  153. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  154.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  155. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  156.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  157. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  158.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  159. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  160. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  161. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  162.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  163.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  164.   printed.
  165.  
  166. Picture Puzzles:
  167. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  168.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  169.   range of abilities.
  170. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  171.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  172.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  173.   levels.
  174. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  175.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  176. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  177.   or columns into their correct positions.

  179. Miscellaneous:
  180. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  181.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  182. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  183.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  184.   your own tests.
  185. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  186.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  187. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  188.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  189. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  190.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  191. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  192.   export as a sprite file.
  193. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  194.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  195.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  196.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  197. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  198.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  199.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  200.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  201. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  202.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  203.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
  204.   a DTP application.
